Play! by Sephora January 2017 Review – Beauty, Set, GO

Friday, January 20, 2017
It is hard to believe that the first Play! by Sephora box of the year has already arrived. It feels like just last week that we unboxed the December box. While this is yet another interruption in our regularly scheduled programming, let's chat about this box while it is still relevant. I am curious to see what the new year will bring us in this first box. This month's theme is Beauty, Set, Go.

The bag is totally different this time around. It has a sporty/athletic feel. The back of the bag is mesh, which gave me an accidental peek at the products. The rest of the bag is not canvas, rather, a plastic-feeling fabric. It overall feels very "cheap."

Amore Pacific Color Control Cushion Compact

I have a lot to say about this sample, so hang tight. Upon first glance it appears that there are 3 separate blush samples, however, these are CC cream cushions, and the top package contains a super soft sponge. I can see myself using the sponge, which is unusual. I usually prefer to use my own tool when cosmetics include their own. The CC creams claim to hydrate and protect with buildable, weightless coverage. The directions state to use the sponge to pat one of the creams all over the face, then blend. Shade 104 Tan Blush can be used to brighten the under eye area if your skin tone is darker. Shade 106 Almond Blush can subtly contour the cheekbones if your skin tone is lighter. The included sheet also states that neither of these colors may be a suitable match for your skin tone, but Sephora can match you up. I am left feeling confused about properly using this sample. I will have to do some research and watch some videos before using it.

Ouai Haircare Treatment Masque

Immediately under the light I can see that the tube is extremely less than half full, which is aggravating. This product claims to help damaged hair by making it smooth and soft. You apply it to your hair 5-10 minutes before your shower, and rise it out. It can be used as needed. It looks and smells like a runny white shampoo. A warning here- it comes out of the tube very fast!

Tarte Frixxxtion Stick

This is a very interesting product to me. I have never encountered anything like it before. It is a twist-up gel face cleanser that turns into a lather that washes away impurities. You swipe it onto your damp face in circular motions, massage it with your fingers, and rinse. It is to be used two to three times per week. It is a black gel with no scent.

I have actually used this product prior to writing this post. The product applies black and stays black while washing! It actually has exfoliating bits in it. The bits feel very gentle and fine.

Youth to the People Kale + Spinach + Hylauronic Acid Age Prevention Cream

It seems like aging creams are a theme lately. This is a whipped, lightweight cream that restores skin and delivers antioxidants. The directions state to apply it to the face or neck in the morning or night. Kale is supposed to eliminate free radicals, while spinach slows the signs of aging, and green tea protects against sun damage. This is a white cream with no scent.

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey

Apparently this is a best-selling lip product that has been around for many years. It definitely has that classic lipstick look about it. This product is a cross between a lipstick and a lipgloss, which delivers sheer color with a glossy finish. I would say the swatch lives up to this claim. I am not a fan of sheer lip colors, unless I am going for a quick no-makeup look. Also, the lipstick snapped in half at the base of the bullet when I swatched this. I think it would be best used over a lipstick. Overall, not impressed.

Tory Burch Love Relentlessly

I have to say that I am really liking this perfume. The best way that I can describe it is that it smells like a high-end perfume/fragrance. You can definitely tell the difference between a body spray and a perfume, and this smells like a quality perfume. The floral notes really hit you at first, but it mellows out. The scents include flowers, pink pepper, orris root, and patchouli. I do have an interesting note about this perfume. I sprayed less than a full pump of it onto my left wrist for the sake of writing this post. The scent was still on my wrist after my shower later that night! I have never had a perfume or body spray do that before. The staying power paired with the pretty scent make me want to buy it.

Tory Burch Love Relentlessly

My overall summary of this box is that I wish there was more cosmetics and less skincare items, as this is a Sephora box, and I connote Sephora with makeup. In addition, I feel as though subscription boxes lately have been all about skincare, and now I have way too many facial creams and cleansers to use up. However, I would say that I am not disappointed and will use these samples. What do you think of this month's box? Let me know in the comments. Until next time, continue to let your true beauty shine.
