Play! by Sephora September 2016 Review – The Unbasic Basics

Friday, September 23, 2016
I have been impressed with the Play! by Sephora subscription box thus far, so I look forward to receiving it every month. Upon reading the theme "The Unbasic Basics," I really had no idea what to expect. But, let me tell you, I definitely squealed while pouring the products out of the bag. The products provided truly put a new spin on what you would consider to be the basics in your makeup bag. Now that I have built up enough suspense, let's get on to the unboxing, swatching, and first impressions.

Of course, the bag is adorable, just as it is every month. I feel that the statement on the bag is highly accurate about lipstick.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Overnight Perfecter

The directions state that you are to apply this product to dry or damp hair before bed, from root to tip but focusing on ends, and then comb it through. In the morning you can wash it out or leave it in. What I find most miraculous is that the product is supposed to last for five washes, even if you use a clarifying shampoo. Also, it is supposed to absorb quickly so that it is "pillow proof." I already went ahead and did an application of this product. It is a runny white cream and smells like a nice shampoo. We shall see what my hair looks like over time. I would consider paying full price for it if it changes the look of my hair for the better.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel

This product was definitely a squealer for me, because who does not want to try an Anastasia Beverly Hills brow product?! The applicator is a standard mascara wand. I thought that the size might be a little tricky to work with, so I went ahead and tried this out. I had no application problems and my brows stayed in place. I really hate when I use a brow mascara or wax, and then my brow hairs start moving out of place when I apply eyeshadow. That did not happen with this product.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper

This product also got a squeal out of me. I have seen so many people use it in videos, and it always looks so fast and precise. The tip is very interesting because it seems like a tapered felt tip, but it is really 200+ bristles, like a paintbrush! Somehow, they stay in shape. This product is very black and just as easy to use at it looks. You can create thin or thick lines in a snap. It also lasts all day. I will note it is not very waterproof, as I easily wiped the swatch off of my hand.

Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation Facial Creme

This is a curious product, as the package and the description sheet provided by Sephora do not say what benefits you are supposed to get from this product, besides that it can be used as a makeup primer. All I know is that it is a facial cream that looks and feels like a standard white cream. It has no recognizable smell. I already tried this as a primer and I will never do so again. Part way through my makeup application I realized that my foundation never set, even though I applied powder. I ended up packing on even more powder and hoping for the best. My foundation just stayed tacky. I will stick to my drugstore primer! However, that does not give me much motivation to use this product since now I know it only works well as a moisturizer with unknown benefits.

Sephora Rouge Brilliance Lipstick in Love Spell

I initially thought that the shade of this lipstick was really pretty, but the swatch totally turned me off. It is very sheer, not the color I was expecting, and is not buildable at all. It is also extremely greasy. I know that I will not be able to stand the greasy feel, so I do not anticipate using this product.

Atelier Colonge in Sud Magnolia

I was surprised to get such a cute postcard with this perfume sample. It really gave me that "made in Paris" feel. I actually kept it and put it on display! I like the scent of the perfume and already used it. It definitely smells like magnolia. I know the other scents are present as well, but my nose is not cultured enough to pick them all out. Besides magnolia, this fragrance also contains bitter orange, pomelo, black currant, and Bulgarian rose, to name a few ingredients.

While there were two products that I was not very fond of, the other products have shot right to the top of my 'will use this in my routine' list. I absolutely love getting to play with high-end brands that I just cannot afford, and seeing how their quality compares to drugstore products. Here's to looking forward to the October box. Until next time, continue to let your true beauty shine.
